| Celtic Crosses Celts are artistic by nature and symbolism abounds in their culture. The most widely-known example is the Celtic Cross, incorporating the ancient Celtic Wheel of Life with the Christian Cross. Stone crosses, some as tall as 21 feet, carved with intense detail began to appear around the 6th century. As many as 200 crosses, either whole or in fragments still exist in Ireland today. Celtic crosses are known for their intricately carved scenes of the Bible and change with each locality. Knotwork and interlaced animals were motifs used by the early monks as they glorified God through the beauty and bounty of creation. |
